Stylin IT

This is a selection of some of my latest work.

In 2003, I created my first site which was for an online investment club. This was created with ASP.NET(a language that creates that works with database to create the webpage) and SQL Server (database). This highly successful project was for a third year Computer Programmer Analyst project at Conestoga College, which allowed members to log in to view secure content, add content, have private discussions and votes. The investment club dissolved in 2006. However it helped me realize the high cost of licensing and ownership that comes with Microsoft's solutions, which is why some companies charge an arm and a leg for websites. Or perhaps to support a team of staff, with each claiming a certain expertise. Professional websites do not need to cost thousands of dollars.

Leslie choose to become an expert in the open source LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) when it came time to support business. The choice to select Joomla was the result of positive peer feedback and then professional application of this content management system (cms). Content Management Sites are have two parts - the template, which determines how the site looks and feels, and the HTML page which pulls all the styles together and the content from the database. The content is easily editable, like on Facebook. The first Joomla site I deployed was for the United Way of Cambridge and North Dumfries, Volunteer and Information Cambridge and the Social Planning Council, for a community development project - called Moving Forward Together, which has also since gone offline.

The name Stylin IT was selected because of the style sheets - it has nothing to do with hairstyling. IT stands for Information Technology, and is pronounced I T, not "it".
